Reconstructive Gastric Surgery

Reconstructive gastric surgery covers complex procedures aimed at restoring the normal passage of food, eliminating postoperative complications, and improving quality of life in patients who have previously had stomach or esophageal surgery.

What is reconstructive gastric surgery?

These are individually planned operations performed after previous stomach surgery when anatomical or functional problems develop.

The extent of reconstruction depends on the nature of the original operation, the type of complication, and the patient's general condition. In most cases, the operation involves reconstructing the gastrointestinal anastomosis or changing the way the continuity of the digestive tract is restored.

MSI

Our approach

At MSI, reconstructive operations are performed after a detailed review of previous treatment and a full preoperative examination.

Before surgery, the following may be performed:

  • gastroscopy
  • computed tomography
  • contrast X-ray study
  • laboratory tests
  • assessment of nutritional status

The goal of treatment is not only to fix the technical problem but also to restore normal digestive function as fully as possible.

Every reconstructive operation is individual and is performed after careful planning. Minimally invasive laparoscopic technology is used whenever possible.

When is surgery needed?

Reconstructive procedures are performed for:

  • leakage of gastrointestinal anastomoses after the acute process has healed
  • scar strictures of anastomoses
  • severe gastroesophageal or bile reflux after surgery
  • afferent or efferent loop syndrome
  • chronic postoperative fistulas
  • recurrent anastomotic ulcers
  • functional problems after previous gastric resections
  • other complications after stomach surgery

Indications for surgery

Surgery is recommended for:

  • ineffective medical or endoscopic treatment
  • significant impairment of food passage
  • a marked decline in quality of life
  • postoperative complications requiring surgical correction

How is the operation performed?

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia.

After postoperative changes and adhesions are released, the upper abdominal organs are explored. Depending on the clinical situation, the anastomosis is reconstructed, the type of reconstruction is changed (for example, to *Roux-en-Y*), a stricture is eliminated, abnormal segments are resected, or other necessary restorative procedures are performed.

Advantages of reconstructive treatment

  • Restoration of normal food passage
  • Elimination of postoperative complications
  • Improved quality of life
  • Less reflux and discomfort
  • Return to full, normal eating
  • An individual approach to every clinical situation

Recovery after surgery

The length of recovery depends on the complexity of the reconstruction and on previous operations.

Postoperative treatment follows *ERAS* principles, with a gradual return to eating, monitoring of nutritional status, and prevention of possible complications.

MSI

Our advantages

  • Specialization in complex reconstructive surgery
  • Extensive experience in repeat stomach operations
  • Individual planning of the reconstruction
  • Use of modern laparoscopic technology whenever possible
  • A comprehensive multidisciplinary approach
  • Adherence to international guidelines
  • Enhanced recovery program (ERAS)

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Some complications can be resolved with medication or endoscopy. Surgery is performed only when other methods are ineffective or impossible.

In many cases, yes. The final decision depends on the number of previous operations, the extent of adhesions, and the nature of the condition.

Yes. Repeat procedures are technically more challenging because of scarring, altered anatomy, and adhesions, so they require an experienced surgical team.

In most patients, a successful reconstructive operation significantly reduces symptoms, improves nutrition, and restores quality of life.

Yes. After reconstructive surgery, regular follow-up, monitoring of nutritional status, and, if necessary, endoscopic or imaging check-ups are recommended.
